Weather Alerts & Park Conditions

All sports will continue as scheduled during heat, light rain and in cold or windy conditions. Soccer, lacrosse and flag football will still practice and play in heavier rain conditions. If fields are impacted after heavy or prolonged rains or if serious
storm conditions or intense heat is forecast then fields may be closed.

How to know if OBGC is Closed?

During severe storms or after heavy rains the park will sometimes need to be closed to allow the fields to drain and keep them safe and in good condition. We try to alert the community in advance of any severe weather that will prompt a park closure at OBGC, but sometimes the decision is made overnight or in the early morning hours. In those cases, notification of closed fields will be announced on the Weather Hotline at 301-260-9004 or on social media.

If the phone line does not specifically say the park is closed that day then it
remains open. Updates to the message are typically made by 3pm weekdays and
6am weekends.

What to do when there is thunder or lightning?

If there is lightning or thunder during a practice or game, OBGC has a lightning monitoring system that will sound one long alarm throughout the park when any strikes have been detected in the area. All field participants need to take immediate shelter under a roof or in their car (NOT under trees, tents or umbrellas). When lightning is no longer detected the system will sound 3 short alarms letting you know it is safe to resume play.

What if our practice or game is at a school gym?

Our winter sports (wrestling and basketball) exclusively run out of MCPS facilities, so if there are closures or delays it impacts these programs. If your child does not attend MCPS or you are not signed up to get the MCPS alerts we strongly encourage you to sign up.

OBGC coaches and admins will notify participants as soon as possible whether there are delays or closures, but direct alerts from MCPS are the most reliable and timely.
