Summer Rugby
OBGC is now partnered with MD Exiles Youth Rugby to offer summer touch (no-tackle) rugby and FREE rugby intro sessions.
SUMMER TOUCH:
– What is it? Touch rugby is just regular rugby but without the tackling! Pass backward, run forward, and learn rugby’s culture of mutual respect and teamwork!
– When and where? Our season runs from late May until the end of July. We hold practices in Olney twice a week with games on Saturday mornings – usually within about 30 minutes of Olney with occasional trips up to one hour. The season ends with a tournament in Millersville, MD the last weekend of July. For 2025, practices will be Mondays and Wednesdays at OBGC from 6-7:30 (shorter for younger age groups).
– Who can play? Boys and girls are welcome! We have co-ed teams for kids and teens ages 5-16.
Player age:
For the Summer 2025 season, the age group is based on the player’s age as of September 1, 2024 (beginning of the 2024-2025 school year). For example, if your child was 6 on September 1, 2024, but turned 7 two weeks later on September 15, he or she will still play U7.
On September 1, 2024, my player was:
Younger than 5 – Not eligible to play this season*
-5 or 6 – Will play U7 (usually finishing K, 1st grade)
-7 or 8 – Will play U9 (usually finishing 2nd, 3rd grade
-9 or 10 – Will play U11 (usually finishing 4th, 5th grade)
-11 or 12 – Will play U13 (usually finishing 6th, 7th grade)
-13, 14, or 15 – Will play U16 (usually finishing 8th, 9th, 10th grade)
16 or older – not eligible to play this season*

– What does it cost? $250/player. This pays for: uniform jersey & shorts, up to 21 practices, up to 7 Saturday games (about 3 games ea.), opportunity to earn a skill recognition T-shirt, and a supportive team with a 1:5 coach:player ratio.
Scholarships and discounts.
– Parents willing to volunteer as coaches may receive a 50% discount toward one player. Please contact us at mdexilesyouthrugby@gmail.com before registration for details.
– Parents willing to volunteer as team managers may receive a $125 scholarship from the Exiles club.
– OBGC offers significant discounts for families receiving SNAP, FARMS, or Medicaid benefits.
– The Maryland Exiles club also offers rugby scholarships for families who may not qualify for OBGC reduced registration, but who need financial assistance. MD Exiles Scholarship HERE.
Equipment:
-Cleats (soccer cleats for kicking are the best)
-A large water bottle (32oz or more)
-Athletic clothes to run in
